Welcome to the home of the African Oyster Trust.We are a small British registered charity dedicated to assisting in the relief of poverty and sickness in The Gambia.
By focusing on carefully selected local projects, and by working closely with reliable contacts on the ground, we believe that a small charity like ours can make a real difference to the lives of thousands of families. We support health and nursery education projects that are not funded by the Gambian government. We currently support two health clinics who provide affordable healthcare to thousands of Gambians of all ages. They provide facilities and subsidise medicines to wide catchment areas who would otherwise need to travel long distances to the nearest hospital. We work with our sister British charity, Gambia School Support, to help deliver nursery school education to almost 2,000 children every year through 13 community schools located throughout the country. Since compulsory formal education in Lower Basic Schools does not begin until after age 7, these Early Childhood Development schools provide a lifelong head start to needy children. We believe education to be one of the most powerful and long-lasting ways of breaking the cycle of poverty. All of our funds are raised by individual and corporate donations and through fund-raising events. We pride ourselves on not wasting money on unnecessary administration, with the majority of administration costs and responsibilities being covered by trustees and volunteers.
